1517 Polk St, San Francisco  94109 • 415-673-1101
Distance: ~0.56 mi from The Fairmont San Francisco
Description: NOB HILL. For generations, this small eatery has been delighting seafood lovers from all over the city. Distinguished by a marble counter and pull-up stools, the place puts all its attention on fresh shellfish, especially just-shucked oysters. You can also try clams on the half-shell, cracked crab, lobster, and shrimp, along with a few soups and salads. The place doesn't stand out from the street, so keep your eyes peeled. And if you're around during the lunchtime rush, you'll most likely have to wait. Since 1912.

We visited San Francisco last week, and went straight to the Swan Oyster Depot (literally) as we'd read a review in a travel magazine that said it was "Not to be missed." This is a GREAT place for a quick lunch while you're out sightseeing, or for grabbing an early dinner. You sit at the bar (no tables) and order until you're full. All of the servers are sons of the founder, and all are more than happy to tell you a story about the place, guide you to a local hangout, or just sit and shoot the breeze. The food is awesome, and so fresh you could swear it was still moving. Oysters were particularly good. HINT: Treat the servers nice and you're sure to get an extra glass of wine, free beer, or something. They're very generous, and really want to make you feel welcome.
