Fort Point National Historic Site
(Attractions & Activities - Sightseeing)
Long Ave and Marine Dr Golden Gate Nat'l Recreation Area, San Francisco  94129 • 415-556-1693
Distance: ~3.50 mi from The Fairmont San Francisco
Description: THE PRESIDIO. Built to defend the city and bay during the Civil War, this stone fort and its cannons soon became obsolete. Luckily for tourists, the designer of the Golden Gate Bridge was amazed by the fort's master masonry and decided to build around it rather than remove it for the bridge's south anchorage. Fort Point now functions as a museum, and guided and self-guided tours are available, along with exhibits and demonstrations. Located at the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Fort Point National Historic Site, located under the south anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge is the only brick fortification of its kind on the West Coast. With it's panoramic views that you can capture from up top, you can catch a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge from underneath. They have cannon demonstrations and tours of the fort daily. There is also a Fort Point Bookstore with a wide variety of literature about the Civil War Era, along with period toys and novelties, and even hot coffee. (Trust me you'll need the hot coffee there.) They also show a video about the history of the fort and about Building the Golden Gate Bridge. They periodically have Civil War Reenactors at the site, but usually around October during Fleet Week. It's open to the public everyday, and you can even go to their official website to find more information about their park (Golden Gate National Parks) at: http://www.nps.gov/fopo And the last thing about Fort Point is that there is no admission, they just ask you to follow a few rules like no smoking, no eating, no pets, and no biking in the fort.
