Bistro 990
(Restaurants - French)
990 Bay St, Toronto  M5S 3A8 • 416-921-9990
Distance: ~2.224 km from The Fairmont Royal York
Description: DOWNTOWN. Known as much for its star-studded list of regulars as for its menu of slightly upscale comfort fare, Bistro 990 enjoys a well-deserved reputation. The food is reliably good and expertly prepared. Duck breast, for example, is offered rare; roasted chicken with garlic mashed potatoes is perfectly seasoned and tender; and mussels come bathed in a lovely wine-y red broth. During the Film Festival the place is overflowing with easy-to-recognize faces, but since Toronto is the home base of choice for plenty of celebrities you never know who might be at the table next to yours.

Some of the reviews seem unquestionably positive. This one is not! Even though our group of 24 spent ~$3600 for a $5 steak & fries and some half decent wine - the payout did not promise courteous service nor value for one's dollar - even a few thousand of them! Upon arriving we waited an extended period of time for far less than reasonable service. The limited menu (supposedly because of our large group) consisted of steak and fries or salmon. I should have gone with the salmon - fishy as it may have been. Few of us were given the choice of how well the steak was cooked. Many of them had seemingly more gristle than meat. Even the 'Keg' would have beat 990 hands down in comparison. As our meal wound down so did the service. One of our party kindly asked for a tea as the server brought around the coffee; the simple request was returned with the server rolling her eyes in minor disgust. As for the good reviews we read prior to going here - we certainly did not share their experience. Would we return, one might ask? NO WAY !!
