MIDTOWN. A celebrity magnet if ever there was one, Sotto Sotto offers flattering candlelight, attentive service, and a massive menu of simple classics and more complex creations. There's an abundance of wonderful salads and antipasti, such as poached octopus with marinated Mediterranean veggies, grilled polenta with mushrooms and gorgonzola, and swordfish carpaccio. Pastas are available as second or main courses; try traditional spaghetti al pomodoro or spicy rigatoni puttanesca with anchovies. Main courses feature veal, beef, seafood and poultry, and there are several "risotto for two" options. |

| | Last night I had one of my worst dining experiences ever. I have gone to Sotto Sotto with my husband a number of times and had very memorable food and service. Last night I went with a girlfriend, a fellow foody, and the experience was very different. Having eaten at many of TO's best restaurants, we are not neophyte diners by any stretch of the imagination. Last night was our first truly awful dining experience thanks solely to the waiter's misogynistic attitude and indifference towards anyone he didn't deem "special" enough. It seemed obvious that the success they've enjoyed with their famous clientele has given some of their staff the idea that the rest of us regular folk don't deserve decent service. On top of the bad service, the previously great Caesar salad was mediocre at best (pre-cut bagged lettuce, 2 tiny croutons and bland). When asked, we told them why we didn't finish it and were given more attitude before it was taken off the bill (not something we requested). Then, my friend ordered the special (lamb shank), but also wanted some pasta. He charged her for the full special (served without the other sides) and then charged her for a 1/2 pasta order instead of substituting. It wasn't about the money, but one small lamb shank and a splash of pasta isn't worth $40. It was difficult to decide what to tip, as we didn't want to validate his opinion of us as two "cheap" women diners. We left the minimum (10%-something I never do) and a note indicating the reason (with his ego, you'd have to spell it out). Considering the cumulative amount of time he spent at our table didn't total 5 minutes over 2 hours, the tip we left was more than generous. (To improve our dining out karma, we gave a hugely excessive tip to the waiter at our next stop for outstanding service.) It is hard to find a "great" pasta joint in this city, and for me it just got a little harder. If you are looking for a great dining experience, where you feel special, regardless of your fame or lack there of, don't go to Sotto Sotto. |
