If you see a whimsically painted 7-foot concrete polar bear, and you will since there are 61 of them scattered around town, here's the story. In commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of CancerCare Manitoba in 2005, different Winnipeg businesses sponsored artists to decorate each bear to raise money for cancer awareness and research. The bears were all displayed on Broadway for several months, then put in storage. Now they have all been moved to their permanent homes around town. If you're pressed for time, there are two places where you can check out several bears at once: on Assiniboine Avenue behind the Manitoba Legislature, and at the Norquay Building.
