Description:
|
An amazing, edifying display of pan-Pacific cultures and traditions, this festival is about much more than canoes. Even so, the main event is the creation of beautiful, viable vessels from solid logs during the course of the two-week event. Artisans work in full view of spectators, lovingly sculpting and adorning, while other craftspeople make drums, surfboards, and thatching. In the last two days of the festival, completed canoes are paraded down Front Street and then launched with ritual and reverence. Afterwards, food and music become part of the celebration. Art, dance, and crafts can also be viewed, and a portion of the festivities takes place at nearby Banyan Tree Park. |
