I had to respond to first reviewer. The US National Arboretum is a gem of Washington DC. It can be tricky to find but if you bring directions it's not very hard, and to say it's in one of the "most dangerous areas of DC" is beside the point. The Arboretum is right on US Route 50, not in a crack alley. Anyway, the Arboretum is peaceful, NOT crowded, and full of interest year round. I love Fern Valley for its native woodland plants in the spring, the rose and herb gardens, the dogwoods in spring, the dozens and dozens of peonies in May, the endless collection of hollies in the winter, the bonsai (some centuries old) and the unusual and enormous trees. And I haven't even mentioned the wooded azaela hills yet, catch them in early May. In the Washington area, there are better gardens in terms of architecture/design, but for a more natural setting nothing in the DC area can beat the Arboretum.

How did this get picked for the ten best? You're kidding, right? This is a lovely, lovely park for a stroll, don't get me wrong. But it's next to impossible to find if you're not a local, and it's in the midst of one of the most crowded and dangerous areas of DC. I wouldn't send any tourist their on their own, that's for sure!
