Description:
Voyageurs (French fur traders who plied their trade throughout this region) rendezvoused at “the forks” each year for a few days of revelry, and this massive event commemorates their efforts to create a permanent settlement. Western Canada’s largest winter event includes everything from snow sculptures, ice climbing, music, dance, games, a fun run, a formal ball, and tons of food (French, of course). There are numerous competitions, too, testing the mettle of modern-day would-be voyageurs. Most events are at Fort Gibraltar. The best way to enjoy the festivities is to purchase a button which allows you daily admission to the grounds and most events. |

A film festival for kids, Freeze Frame screens dozens of independent films and videos (documentaries, animated shorts, features) from around the world. A healthy proportion of films hail from Canada and many are in both English and French. There are also various workshops and film discussions, and participants can even make their own claymation videos. Venues include the Globe Cinema, the IMAX Theatre and Prairie Theatre Exchange (all at Portage Place Mall, 393 Portage Pl), and the University of Manitoba (Downtown Aboriginal Education Centre, 11 The Promenade). |

If you visit Winnipeg in late June, one thing’s for sure: your toes will be tapping to the sounds of jazz greats like the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Pink Martini, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Garrett, Madeleine Peyroux, Holly Cole and Kurt Elling. Well-known blues artists make appearances as well, like Jonny Lang, John Lee Hooker, Jr., and Guitar Shorty. In addition to about 60 concerts, there is a series of free lunchtime performances in Old Market Square. Description:
With seven daytime stages (and two nighttime ones), you know this festival is about the music. In fact, it’s one of the oldest and largest folk festivals in the world, with an annual attendance of about 60,000 and more than 250 musicians like Nerissa and Katryna Nields, Los Lobos, Jill Barber, Randy Newman, The Flatlanders, Leo Kottke, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Michael Franti and Spearhead and The Indigo Girls. There’s plenty more, though, from arts and crafts vendors to local restaurant vendors to a bunch of fun kid’s activities. Birds Hill Provincial Park is located 34 km (20 mi) northeast of Winnipeg.
