Velvet Glove
(Restaurants - Canadian)
Two Lombard Pl Fairmont Winnipeg, Winnipeg  R3B 0Y3 • 204-985-6255 • 204-957-1350
Distance: ~59 m *
Description: The Fairmont's signature dining room is elegant with a touch of the rustic in its wood paneling. Canadian cuisine is the forte, and the menu is simply amazing. Start with an indulgence such as pan seared Quebec foie gras with Thai chili-vanilla poached pear and maple-dusted fry bread. Then, for a fun and dramatic presentation, select the roasted bison filet (for two) with Crown Royal-saskatoon berry jus, prepared tableside. Alternatively, opt for the pistachio-flax crusted rack of lamb, or a mixed grill of bison filet, lamb chop and Tiroler bacon with minted apricot-pear relish. The Velvet Glove is Winnipeg's only Four Diamond CAA/AAA restaurant.

Sydney's
(Restaurants - Canadian)
One Forks Market Rd Forks Market, Winnipeg  R3C 4L9 • 204-942-6075
Distance: ~0.817 km *
Description: If you normally shy away from an elaborate multi-course dinner because of the expense and overall richness, you'll want to give Sydney's a try. For an amazingly low price, you choose a five-course meal from chef Michael Schafer's innovative and ever-changing menu of tapas-sized dishes. Your first course might be duck liver pate on toasted brioche with Sauterne gelée. Second course could be langoustine risotto or "Tongue and Cheek," a terrine of Marsala-poached veal tongue on toast points with confit of veal cheek on sweet corn compote. The third course is the chef's choice of sorbet. Next is the "entrée," which could be harissa-rubbed rack of lamb or lemongrass marinated pork loin. The grand finale: Callebaut chocolate and caramel fudge pudding with black cherry ice cream, or apricot bavarois. If this is still a bit overwhelming, go for lunch when the menu is a la carte!

Fude
(Restaurants - Canadian)
99 Osborne St, Winnipeg  R3L 2R4 • 204-284-3833
Distance: ~2.014 km *
Description: For a departure from the ordinary, make your way up to this second floor restaurant, where you'll find a contemporary take on North American cuisine. There's nothing too bizarre, but this is decidedly creative cooking. Everything is made in house from scratch, including salad dressings and breads. Try bison back ribs with espresso BBQ sauce, Boomerang Goreng (the Indonesian recipe done Manitoba-style), or chili-chocolate chicken. The menu includes wine suggestions for each dish. For dessert, Die By Chai is the way to go: chai tea blended with cinnamon, ginger and cloves, whipped up with cream cheese and served in a gingersnap crust.

Mise
(Restaurants - Canadian)
222 Osborne St, Winnipeg  • 204-284-7916
Distance: ~2.300 km *
Description: Despite its French-sounding moniker, Mise specializes in Canadian regional cuisine. Chef Terry Gereta, formerly of the highly regarded Fusion Grill, capitalizes on fresh local ingredients, using them in globally inspired dishes like duck confit, cornmeal-crusted pickerel and elk-stuffed quail. Other good things to try: baby back ribs (pork) with a super spicy harissa-infused dipping sauce, and wild boar tenderloin with sour cherry demi-glace. Wild rice makes numerous appearances in various guises (in latkes, popped and covering a chocolate truffle, in hash, and puffed as a side dish), as well. Enjoy it all in a cozy subterranean dining room with exposed brick walls and linen napkins.

Luxsole
(Restaurants - Canadian)
726 Osborne St, Winnipeg  R3L 2C2 • 204-453-0222
Distance: ~3.768 km *
Description: Owned by four brothers from a farming family, who don't just pay lip service to using local foods – they actually do use only ingredients (usually organic) from area farms. Which means that the plate of lamb masala, organic jerk chicken, jambalaya, or pasta with tomato, basil, feta and chorizo or chicken is far tastier than you might find elsewhere. There's also a variety of tapas-sized choices like Tuscan hummus dip, Thai chicken skewers, bison with sticky garlic-ginger sauce, bruschetta, quesadillas, Kenyan spiced ribs, Asian lettuce wraps.
