Description:
The Fairmont's signature dining room is elegant with a touch of the rustic in its wood paneling. Canadian cuisine is the forte, and the menu is simply amazing. Start with an indulgence such as pan seared Quebec foie gras with Thai chili-vanilla poached pear and maple-dusted fry bread. Then, for a fun and dramatic presentation, select the roasted bison filet (for two) with Crown Royal-saskatoon berry jus, prepared tableside. Alternatively, opt for the pistachio-flax crusted rack of lamb, or a mixed grill of bison filet, lamb chop and Tiroler bacon with minted apricot-pear relish. The Velvet Glove is Winnipeg's only Four Diamond CAA/AAA restaurant. |

Description:
Tiny and busy, Tre Visi is ideal for pre-theater comfort food. Traditional Italian cooking is superb here, from antipasti straight through to dessert. Start off with either carpaccio or fried calamari – both are excellent. Follow with farfalle Tre Visi (with tomato, crumbled hot Italian sausage and sweet red peppers), or the incredible housemade gnocchi with pesto cream sauce or marinara. Try a veal dish for your main course – you won't be disappointed. Desserts vary from week to week, but are well worth the calories. |

Description:
If you normally shy away from an elaborate multi-course dinner because of the expense and overall richness, you'll want to give Sydney's a try. For an amazingly low price, you choose a five-course meal from chef Michael Schafer's innovative and ever-changing menu of tapas-sized dishes. Your first course might be duck liver pate on toasted brioche with Sauterne gelée. Second course could be langoustine risotto or "Tongue and Cheek," a terrine of Marsala-poached veal tongue on toast points with confit of veal cheek on sweet corn compote. The third course is the chef's choice of sorbet. Next is the "entrée," which could be harissa-rubbed rack of lamb or lemongrass marinated pork loin. The grand finale: Callebaut chocolate and caramel fudge pudding with black cherry ice cream, or apricot bavarois. If this is still a bit overwhelming, go for lunch when the menu is a la carte! |

Description:
DOWNTOWN. At Pasta la Vista, the highlights are the mostly Italian menu, sparked by an Asian inspiration here and there, and an extensive wine list with several by-the-glass options (winner of Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence). Stick to the classics like Caesar salad or bruschetta to start, or be adventurous and try Asian pork gyoza or chicken spring rolls. Second options are myriad and frequently quite creative, such as the "Flurry of Curry" linguine with chicken. Rotisserie chicken is wonderful, but there are plenty of main dish choices from prime rib to short ribs. |

Description:
Renowned as much for its eclectic décor as its equally eclectic food, Step 'n Out is adorned with vintage miniature shoes, and lots of them! Romantic and charming, the pint-sized restaurant (13 tables) writes a new menu every day with an emphasis on Australian cuisine – lots of seafood and bright fruits and vegetables. You might enjoy curried pumpkin ravioli, Black Angus beef medallions on roasted vegetable ratatouille, beef and pork tourtiere (pie) with dark gravy, or linguine in creamy Pernod sauce with shrimp and scallops. Don't try to bring the whole crew, though – they can accommodate parties of only four or fewer! |

THE FORKS. Head to this spot to enjoy authentic Southern barbecue and Cajun specialties. Ribs are smoked till they're fall-off-the-bone tender and are served in a spicy tomato-based sauce. For something lighter, try zesty shrimp and grits. This festive restaurant has a dining room with blues music pumped in through the speakers. If it's nice, sit on one of the two patios overlooking the river. Margarita lovers take note: Muddy Waters serves tangy margaritas made from real fruit – not a mix! |

Description:
Edohei was the first sushi restaurant in town, and most folks still consider it the best. The original Edohei restaurant opened in Tokyo in 1933; the owner of Winnipeg's Edohei was trained at the Japanese restaurant and chose the name when he opened his own place in 1988. Supremely fresh sushi and sashimi make up the bulk of the menu, but you can also find noodles dishes and donburi. A perennial favorite. |
