LES ÉBOULEMENTS. For a true look into the past, make the trip down to Les Éboulements to see this mill, which dates back to the late 18th century and falls under the auspices of the Canadian Heritage of Québec. Built by settler Jean-François Tremblay, the gristmill overlooks a small stream and waterfall and still runs on its original parts. Nearby, you'll find the former seigneurial manor owned by the Sales-Laterrière family; the Brothers of the Sacred Heart have maintained the home since the late-1940s. The mill's driveway is about 500 yards west of the road to quaint St-Joseph-de-la-Rive. Don't forget to stop by the mill's bakery, where delicious white bread, tarts and raisin bread are prepared. |

ST-JOSEPH-DE-LA-RIVE. If you want to visit the Île-aux-Coudres, the ferry leaves the mainland from tiny St-Joseph. For such a small community (a few hundred people live here), there is plenty of stuff to see and do. Visit the fascinating Papeterie Saint-Gilles, where paper is handmade using processes that are more than 300 years old. Shoppers will want to visit Les Santons de Charlevoix, where they'll find handcrafted ceramic figures representing facets of Charlevoix's past. If you need a bite to eat, walk down rue Fèlix-Antoine-Savard to the Boulangerie Laurentide, an old-fashioned bakery that doubles as a general store. |

One of Charlevoix's many hidden treasures, the riverside village of Port-au-Persil is little more than a collection of houses huddled on the banks of the Rivière Persil, an enchanting little stream that cascades over rocks on its way to meet the Saint Lawrence. Pay attention as you're driving through, and you'll find a small pull-off area where a trail leads down to the waterfall. Saint-Siméon's claim to fame is hospitality, which has earned it the inviting title of the "Hotel Village." Upon finding their way to the island's southwestern corner, visitors can see a working stone windmill and watermill, both dating from the early 19th century. The site's interpretive center is located in the old miller's home and affords visitors the chance to learn more about the history of the area. Make sure you bring along your camera, as there are several ideal vantage points around the mills, some of them boasting the distant mountains as a backdrop on clear days.
