        Description: Need a good laugh? If you're in Lake Louise mid-February, check out the Cardboard Box Derby. Creativity is the name of the game: contestants are permitted to use only cardboard, string, tape and glue to construct a snow-worthy sled that can make it down the hill in one piece. Bonus points are awarded for best time and best design. Registration is free the day of the event at Kokanee Kabin.

Ice Magic Festival

        Description: Officially known as the Ice Magic International Ice Sculpture Competition, this festival takes advantage of winter's frigid temperatures. Sculptors from all over the globe compete, crafting intricate, glittering sculptures from enormous blocks of ice. The completed pieces are available for everyone to see, and they're kept on public display until the middle of March or until the weather warms up, whichever comes first. The main competition takes place in front of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, with additional events in the village at Samson Mall.

Volcom Peanut Butter and Rail Jam

        Description: Volcom's snowboard series makes several stops, including one here in Lake Louise. There are four divisions – 15 and under, 16 and over, girls and open (pro-am) – so the competition has wide appeal. The contest runs on a jam format – boarders participate in 20-minute heats and the main objective is to get in as many tricks (the wilder the better) as you can. There's plenty of prizes (and PB&J sandwiches!) for participants, including goodie bags with some cool Volcom gear.

        Description: Doug Meyers was a much loved Lake Louise Ski Club member and coach. He was just 30 years old when brain cancer took his life in 2003. This competitive two-day race was started by the LLSC as a way to honor Meyers' memory and celebrate his love of skiing.

        Description: Attracting the top freeskiing champions from around the country, the Big Mountain Challenge is a four-day extravaganza of extreme skiing. Athletes are judged from the mountain base on overall style, technique and aggression, making this an especially exciting event for spectators. The Junior Big Mountain Challenge is for ages 7-17 – the skiing isn't quite as daring, but these kids still have some wild moves.

        Description: When you live in a place where there's snow on the ground well into May or June, the first signs of spring are really cause to celebrate. And Lake Louise does it up as only a mountain resort could, with live music and outdoor beer gardens, plus ski and snowboard races. Employees of ski and snowboard shops from around Alberta participate in the Shop Showdown competition – expect to see some excellent skiing and boarding. The warmer temperatures and brilliant sunshine give the outdoor event a unique, festive air, sort of like spring break at the beach.

Lake Louise Winterstart World Cup

        Description: This internationally televised race opens the World Cup season, and has become part of the Banff-Lake Louise region's WinterStart celebration. Thousands of spectators converge on the area to see the world's top skiers, including teams from Canada, the US and Europe, compete in the Men's and Women's Downhill and Super-G. There's a huge festival area for spectators and athletes, too.
