Officially known as the Ice Magic International Ice Sculpture Competition, this festival takes advantage of winter's frigid temperatures. Sculptors from all over the globe compete, crafting intricate, glittering sculptures from enormous blocks of ice. The completed pieces are available for everyone to see, and they're kept on public display until the middle of March or until the weather warms up, whichever comes first. Description:
Volcom's snowboard series makes several stops, including one here in Lake Louise. There are four divisions – 15 and under, 16 and over, girls and open (pro-am) – so the competition has wide appeal. The contest runs on a jam format – boarders participate in 20-minute heats and the main objective is to get in as many tricks (the wilder the better) as you can. There's plenty of prizes (and PB&J sandwiches!) for participants, including goodie bags with some cool Volcom gear. |

And Lake Louise does it up as only a mountain resort could, with live music and outdoor beer gardens, plus ski and snowboard races. Employees of ski and snowboard shops from around Alberta participate in the Shop Showdown competition – expect to see some excellent skiing and boarding. The warmer temperatures and brilliant sunshine give the outdoor event a unique, festive air, sort of like spring break at the beach. |
