Bermuda Maritime Museum

        Description: SANDYS PARISH. The largest museum in Bermuda traces the island's extensive nautical history. Housed in a 19th-century fortress built by slave labor, six large halls feature exhibits about Spanish exploration, shipbuilding and the 20th-century cruise ship industry. Also on view are the fortress's defensive ramparts, gun ports, underground tunnels and ammunition magazines. The Shifting House, built in 1837, displays gold bars, silver coins, pottery and jewelry that have been salvaged from 16th- and 17th-century shipwrecks.

        Description: ST GEORGE'S PARISH. This entertaining house museum chronicles its own unique history, and that of St. George's. It was built in 1699 as the Governor's residence for Samuel Day. Governor Day switched the house's title to his own name, which was not discovered until the new governor arrived to move in! The museum also has videos and displays explaining the Bermudian role in the United States' Civil War.

Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity – Bermuda Cathedral

        Description: PEMBROKE PARISH. Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity is the centerpiece of Bermuda's Anglican church. The impressive structure, built in the 1890's of limestone and cedar, was constructed to replace the original church, which arsonists ruined. After admiring the Cathedral's artifacts, be sure to ascend the tower's 150 steps and take in great views of the island. On a beautiful day, you'll enjoy quite a panorama.

Fort Hamilton

        Description: PEMBROKE PARISH. The best time to visit Fort Hamilton is at noon on Monday (November through March), when you'll be able to catch the ceremony of Scottish pipes and dancers. At other times you can simply wander through the fort and its botanical garden, which delights those who enjoy military history as well as those who are interested in flora. Be sure to take in the beautiful views of Hamilton and the bay while you're there.

        Description: SANDYS PARISH. Built to protect the Royal Dockyard, Fort Scaur never saw battle. It's one of the many forts built around the island to provide protection for the British colonists. The vista overlooking the Great Sound is one of the best aspects of a visit to the fort.

Fort St. Catherine

        Description: ST GEORGE'S PARISH. If you only have time to visit one fortification on the island, make it Fort St. Catherine. The island's largest fort, it has been expanded numerous times from 1614 into the 19th century. Housed within its walls are a wealth of historical displays and military artifacts, including replicas of the Crown Jewels. Be sure to allow at least an hour for your visit, although you could spend half the day wandering the tunnels, exploring the vistas and perusing the displays at this site.

Gibb's Hill Lighthouse

        Description: SOUTHAMPTON PARISH. The beacon draws tourists near while warning ships and planes of the island's location. Gibb's Hill, built in 1846, was the island's first lighthouse. Although the eight flights of stairs to the top can seem rather daunting, the views of the island are splendid once you've arrived. Be sure to visit the Lighthouse Tea Room for breakfast, lunch or a simple cup of tea. The gift shop provides mementos and souvenirs.

Royal Naval Dockyards

        Description: SANDYS PARISH. In 1809, the British built this dockyard, which served as the headquarters for the Royal Navy until 1951. Today, the Navy's only influence is felt at the excellent Maritime Museum. The cruise ship terminal, located in the dockyard, offers an excellent spot for people watching – get a picnic lunch and relax for half an hour. When you're rested, head to the shopping arcade, where a wide variety of tempting boutiques and specialty shops sell souvenir items. In the Cooperage area of the dockyard, you can visit the craft market and watch artisans at work. An arts center also displays local and international paintings and sculpture. A water park has snorkeling by the day or hour, and a water sports shop rents boats and helps plan island tours. Plan to spend a day exploring the Dockyard's many diversions.

        Description: PEMBROKE PARISH. Bermuda's parliament is the oldest in the British Commonwealth, with the exception of the United Kingdom. Interested visitors can attend the gallery and watch the political process in action. In the formal tradition, and maintaining a British sense of propriety, the Speaker of the House wears black robes and a powdered wig. Debates are not timed and have been known to last until late in the night, so you may not want to hang around for the entire event. Smart-casual attire is requested.

St. George

        Description: ST GEORGE'S PARISH. History practically oozes from the cobblestones in the back streets of St. George's Parish. You can get a first-hand feel for its earlier times by wandering among the narrow passages in the area. Street names such as Petticoat Lane, Old Maid's Lane and Barber's Name Lane will spark your imagination, evoking long-ago people who inhabited the town. The charming area is a perfect time capsule of the past.
