PEMBROKE PARISH. The best time to visit Fort Hamilton is at noon on Monday (November through March), when you'll be able to catch the ceremony of Scottish pipes and dancers. Be sure to take in the beautiful views of Hamilton and the bay while you're there. |

PEMBROKE PARISH. Bermuda's parliament is the oldest in the British Commonwealth, with the exception of the United Kingdom. Interested visitors can attend the gallery and watch the political process in action. In the formal tradition, and maintaining a British sense of propriety, the Speaker of the House wears black robes and a powdered wig. Debates are not timed and have been known to last until late in the night, so you may not want to hang around for the entire event. Smart-casual attire is requested. |

SANDYS PARISH. The largest museum in Bermuda traces the island's extensive nautical history. Housed in a 19th-century fortress built by slave labor, six large halls feature exhibits about Spanish exploration, shipbuilding and the 20th-century cruise ship industry. Also on view are the fortress's defensive ramparts, gun ports, underground tunnels and ammunition magazines. The Shifting House, built in 1837, displays gold bars, silver coins, pottery and jewelry that have been salvaged from 16th- and 17th-century shipwrecks. |

ST GEORGE'S PARISH. St. Peter's Church is the oldest church in Bermuda, built in 1612. It also reigns as the oldest Anglican church in the western hemisphere. Make sure that you visit the interior to see the cedar box pews and gallery. These features are architectural remnants of a past class structure that separated slaves from white people. The church graveyard is recognized as one of the earliest on the island. To the west, you can see the graveyard where slaves were buried. |

The impressive structure, built in the 1890's of limestone and cedar, was constructed to replace the original church, which arsonists ruined. After admiring the Cathedral's artifacts, be sure to ascend the tower's 150 steps and take in great views of the island. On a beautiful day, you'll enjoy quite a panorama. |

ST GEORGE'S PARISH. If you only have time to visit one fortification on the island, make it Fort St. Catherine. The island's largest fort, it has been expanded numerous times from 1614 into the 19th century. Housed within its walls are a wealth of historical displays and military artifacts, including replicas of the Crown Jewels. Be sure to allow at least an hour for your visit, although you could spend half the day wandering the tunnels, exploring the vistas and perusing the displays at this site. |
