Description:
ZONA TRADICIONAL. In the early 17th century, "New Spain" was an important region for the Spanish. Acapulco was an integral part of trade routes with the Philippine Islands, which were also part of the Spanish empire. In 1616, the fort was built to protect against pirate attacks. An earthquake in 1776 destroyed the original structure, but the current pentagonal building was constructed as an immediate replacement. The Acapulco Historical Museum is housed here and features displays detailing the history and culture of the city from its role in Catholic conversion campaigns to its duties as a port for trade and conquest of the Americas. Embroidered silk tapestries, beads, hand-woven baskets, porcelain vases, Oriental chests and a baroque carriage are on view. |
