398 Hayes St, San Francisco 94102 415-551-1590
|

|
 |
| |
Description:
HAYES VALLEY. Absinthe recalls the days of Dorothy Parker and her circle of witty, sardonic critics. Along with dicing celebrities, they took great pleasure in good food and drink. Plenty of both can be found here, and weekend brunch is especially delightful. Champagne and wines balance the cuisine, which includes cold seafood platters, imported French cheeses, and coq au vin. A tasty caesar salad and a risotto with fava beans, basil, and parmesan are also great options. To sum up – absolutely faultless! |

Description:
NORTH BEACH. Long-stemmed roses and candles set the ambience at this small, romantic restaurant. Unique to Café Jacqueline is its limited menu, consisting of souffles that serve two. Selections change daily, and such delicious ingredients as crab, truffles, and fresh fruit infuse main-course and dessert dishes with great flavor. French-born chef-owner Jacqueline Marguilis describes these soufflés as original works of art. |

Description:
MISSION DISTRICT. High ceilings, a fantastic outdoor patio, and an industrial interior punctuated with a wood-burning oven and linen-draped tables number among Chez Spencer's comforting elements. They only serve as adjuncts, however, to the accomplished cookery, which revels in fine ingredients and an intuitive sense of complementary flavors and textures. Among the temptations you'll find are sauteed scallops, a perfectly prepared filet mignon, and a sublime dish of white asparagus with black truffle emulsion. Desserts are beautifully on par with well-executed main courses. |

Description:
NOB HILL. Roundly praised by critics, the Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton manages to do everything right: magnificent decor, an excellent wine list, professional service and, oh, the food. The contemporary French menu bears an Asian touch, and its execution is without reproof. Representative of the fare are chilled Dungeness crab with mango and red onion compote, slow-roasted Japanese sole with lobster tortellini, and sancho peppercorn-crusted duck breast with kumquat glaze. Excellent wines and champagnes bring out the cuisine's welcome complexity, and artisanal cheeses and hand-made desserts allow guests to cap a meal as their tastes desire. |

Beneath a fabric-draped ceiling, guests ooh and aah over the richly-colored decor while delighting in beautifully prepared dishes such as Atlantic salmon baked in a corn pancake, Colorado lamb loin, seared dayboat scallops and peppered filet mignon. Description:
SOMA. Consistently regarded as one of the city's best bistros, Fringale has a reputation as a noisy, crowded place that offers sensational Basque-inspired cuisine. Within the neutral-toned space, diners are treated to unique, flavor-packed dishes and a broad array of Californian and French wines. Among the temptations you'll encounter are pan-roasted salmon, rack of lamb, confit of duck leg, steamed mussels, and a Black Angus rib-eye. It can be tough to secure a reservation, but doing so ensures an unforgettable culinary feast. |

Description:
MARINA DISTRICT. Somehow, this restaurant's cozy (albeit expanded) dining room and heated back patio seem precisely proportionate to its small-plate menu. Culinary appeal, however, is tremendous, and Luke Sung's "French tapas" offer an innovative take on Spanish tradition. Delectable tidbits range from foie gras to sea bass, roasted mussels, sweetbreads, and a potato galette – all decadent, perfectly prepared morsels. A nice wine list offers by-the-glass selections, and a young, professional crowd contributes to the convivial atmosphere. |

Description:
RUSSIAN HILL. Patrons can't find enough good things to say about La Folie, the small family-run restaurant that mixes sure-handed French cuisine with a refreshing lack of pretense. In the intimate dining room, lush drapery, mirrors and exotic woods impart a note of luxury. The aesthetic is echoed beautifully in the restaurant's artful fare. Chef Roland Passot's joie de vivre shines through in his cooking and is visible in quail and foie gras lollipops, a trio of roasted rabbit with baby vegetables, and sautéed halibut cheeks with tomato confit. Three-, four- and five-course meals satisfy many appetites, as do vegetarian and à la carte options. |

1701 Octavia St, San Francisco 94109 415-775-8500

|
 |
| |
Description:
PACIFIC HEIGHTS. Quince's subdued, elegant interior gets grace notes of glitter from Murano glass chandeliers and lush photography. They're a nice foil to cuisine that's simultaneously accomplished and rustic. Chef Michael Tusk cut his teeth at Chez Panisse and brings a taste for high quality to his own restaurant. The ever-changing menu unites French and Italian sensibilities, as seen in Jerusalem artichoke soup with morels, mouthwatering pastas, and main courses like pork loin crusted with wild nettles and parmesan, spring lamb prepared three ways, or squid flavored with artichokes, olives, and potatoes. An exceptionally well-considered wine list offers both value and variety, and homemade desserts often include tortes, gelati, and galettes. The place is small, so book well in advance. |
