This fine-dining establishment has quickly become one of Calgary's best spots for a special-occasion dinner. Set in a refurbished bank building, the restaurant features a large skylight, wall-hung mirrors, and atmospheric lighting. Up front, separated from the dining room, is a lounge for those who want to soak in the ambience. The menu is updated Continental, culling ingredients and preparation techniques from all over the world. Dishes are complex and exotic, including rack of lamb in artichoke crust with peppermint beet glaze, Angus beef tenderloin with truffled mushroom confit, or grilled Arctic char with saffron risotto. Appetizers and desserts follow suit, and although dishes are elaborate, the quality of cuisine is outstanding. Allow for a leisurely evening. |

This stylish restaurant is somewhat difficult to categorize since it takes inspiration from many places. However, one thing is sure: the cuisine is terrific. The cozy establishment was once a home, and it retains that sense of comfort, both in the furnishings and the food. Here, soups include oyster chowder and bouillabaisse; sandwiches, salads, and pastas are innovative and perfectly composed. Main courses look to the province's best, featuring Alberta beef, duck, lamb, and salmon for entrees. Fondues are warm and satisfying; some include venison and ostrich among their selections. Those who are truly hungry should dig into the 38-oz. porterhouse to abate their pangs. They may not have room for dessert, but you should – creme brulee, a tart, and a luscious chocolate fondue await. |

The food offerings change regularly, making the most of Canada's seasonal meats and produce. Lunchtime fare includes sandwiches, salads, soups, and burgers. Later in the evening, dishes become more sophisticated, and you'll find Atlantic salmon tinged with maple syrup and perfectly-prepared Alberta beef. A good selection of Canadian wines is available too. Although the restaurant does a majority of its business during lunch hours, it's a terrific place to go in the evening, when life's a little slower and you can enjoy the food according to your own schedule. |

Even though the restaurant has remained in the same place for its entire run, the surrounding neighborhood was transformed in the interim. The wood-framed building began as part of a lumber company and now rests in the middle of an eclectic shopping center. One thing that hasn't changed through the years is the popularity of the food. Breakfast is hot and filling, and portions are large. Business folk clamor for the omelets, scrambled eggs, and other traditional dishes, along with lighter options, such as yogurt.
