Description:
Rooted in a 16th-century Mexican legend, peasant Juan Diego's vision of a dark-skinned, Indian Madonna went on to become the country's indigenous icon. Her feast day is celebrated with processions in which pictures and statues of the Madonna are carried through the streets, participants bring roses to shrines in churches, and children dress as Juan Diego. Music, rides, stalls selling food and souvenirs, and crowds pack the streets. |

Tennis greats and those who aspire to become champions gather in Acapulco to take their turn on the clay courts for the Mexican Open Tournament. Hosted by the Fairmont Princess Hotel, a local architectural icon with its 15-story Aztec pyramid-shaped facade, the tournament is an oasis of sport and sun. The players' roster is heavily populated with Latin competitors but you'll find other countries represented too. Food, drink and souvenir items are on sale during the matches. |

Description:
The Mexican Navy was nationalized on June 1, 1917 when the merchant ship Tabasco set sail with an all-Mexican crew. To commemorate, June 1 has traditionally been a day of celebration and feasting in many of Mexico's port towns. In Acapulco, regattas are held and decorated ships fill the harbor. |

Shouts of "¡Viva Mexico!" fill the air along with the music of mariachi and other bands as people celebrate and remember the day in 1810 that Father Hidalgo led a revolt which helped gain independence from Spain. The party starts the night before with a special public address broadcast by the Mexican president. Fireworks, food, rides and all things festive reign throughout the day. Find a good spot in the zócalo for the best vantage point to view the merriment. |

Description:
Bone-shaped candies rattle among the marigolds during this festival that is celebrated throughout Mexico to honor the memory and spirits of children and other deceased family members. A good spot to view the proceedings is near the zócalo (town square) and at nearby cemeteries. Locals gather to decorate shrines with sunny yellow flowers and photos, then parade them through the streets. Music and celebration are non-stop and there is no set schedule or fee to watch. |
