Description:
LAHAINA. Years ago, when workers of many different ethnic backgrounds toiled together in the sugarcane fields, they brought a variety of foods for lunch, and everyone shared with each other. The "mixed plate," as it was called, featured two or three entrees, a scoop of macaroni salad, and "two scoops rice." It was also nutritionally sound. Nowadays, at this colorful, ocean-front eatery, diners may choose from a number of dishes, including coconut prawns, shoyu chicken, kalua pork, and teriyaki beef. Outdoor tables accommodate the crowds, and a full bar serves up cooling beverages. For a taste of local flavor, the Mixed Plate can't be beat. Ask around if you have any doubt. |

Description:
LAHAINA. This airy establishment, cooled by ceiling fans and accented with surf boards, is a local favorite, celebrated for its welcoming ambience and its delicious, multi-national menu. Open all day long, it's a hangout for visitors, Maui locals, surfers, boat crews – everyone. Lunch offerings include salads, burgers, sandwiches, pastas, and a selection of plate lunches. Evil Jungle Pasta, the house specialty, combines linguine, chicken, and vegetables in a spicy Thai peanut sauce; it's a classic among many tasty entrées. The chocolate taco, accompanied by fruit and a strawberry salsa, is also quite satisfying and provides a sweet ending to a relaxing meal. The restaurant serves a late-night menu too, with a range of beers and cocktails. |

Description:
LAHAINA. In the midst of busy Lahaina, this popular establishment has acquired quite a loyal following over the years. Whether diners come for imported pastas or Midwestern beef, they revel in the entertaining ambience, where servers recite the menu and musicians perform live jazz and rock on Friday nights. As for food, prawns amaretto (in a sauce of brandy, cream, and orange juice) are a local favorite, as is shrimp Longhi, prepared with white wine, butter, and herbs. Ahi torino, crusted in macadamia nuts, is also a classic. Lamb, chicken, and veal break from the standards, and the dessert tray, weighed down by decadence, is totally irresistible. For reservations call 808-667-2288. |

Description:
LAHAINA. Decidedly masculine, this upscale sports bar and brew pub is well-known for its wood-roasted meats and handcrafted beers. It also delivers fresh seafood, which you can have prepared in the restaurant or take home with you. The lunch menu focuses on sandwiches, salads, burgers, and fish; at dinner, seafood and rotisserie selections are more popular. There's even a late-night menu that has lighter, munchable options. The brewery produces eight beers, a range of both lagers and ales. They make a great complement to the earthy flavors of wood-roasted meats or to a hearty sandwich. |

Description:
HAIKU. You may have to ferret out this small cafe, but you'll be well-rewarded for your diligence. Casual and fun, it's a favorite hang-out of the windsurfers heading to Ho'okipa Beach. After sampling the food, it'll be your favorite too. At lunch, the selection includes salads, sandwiches, and other specials, but they're not the expected fare. Breads alone exceed the ordinary, whether you choose a baguette, potato bread, or some other herb-studded sensation. The kalua turkey sandwich is a hands-down winner: juicy turkey, melted cheese, and green-chile and cilantro sauce, all on a chewy, crusty roll. |

Description:
WAILUKU. A change of pace is in store at this delightful restaurant. Aspiring to be an "asset to the community" with heart- and diabetic-friendly cuisine, the kitchen turns out creations like grilled chicken with Thai chili sauce, fish tacos, and garlic-crusted ono with cucumber relish. Diners looking to break their diets can try baked opakapaka with lobster passion fruit sauce, or crab cakes drizzled with papaya buerre blanc. Lunch delivery is available, and accomplished, healthful fare with no loss of flavor makes AK's a very attractive prospect. |

Description:
LAHAINA. Locals have pronounced this pizzeria one of Maui's best, and mainland publications concur. Of course, deep-dish pies are terrific, but the place also benefits from the excitement of downtown Lahaina, great views across the harbor, and performances by well-received vocalists and musicians. Aside from slices of hot, loaded pizza, the menu features refreshing salads, especially the sesame chicken and the caesar. Pastas, sandwiches, and spicy buffalo wings round out the offerings at this casual eatery. Everyone is welcome to join in on the fun, and Hawaiian hospitality is always at the forefront. |

Description:
LAHAINA. With a nod to the movie "Forrest Gump," this fun place serves up casual American fare, much of it seafood. The menu makes constant reference to Forrest and his friends; shrimp dishes include such favorites as Dumb Luck Coconut Shrimp and Lt. Dan's Drunken Shrimp. There's also a rib-eye, baby back ribs, salmon, mahi mahi, crab legs, and a veggie plate, not to mention a variety of sandwiches and salads. You'll also find a good selection of cocktails and smoothies, fruity and refreshing in quite different ways! So bring friends or family, munch on an order of peel 'n' eat shrimp, and enjoy the views of Lani and Molokai. Forrest would want it that way. |
