LAHAINA. In the midst of busy Lahaina, this popular establishment has acquired quite a loyal following over the years. Whether diners come for imported pastas or Midwestern beef, they revel in the entertaining ambience, where servers recite the menu and musicians perform live jazz and rock on Friday nights. As for food, prawns amaretto (in a sauce of brandy, cream, and orange juice) are a local favorite, as is shrimp Longhi, prepared with white wine, butter, and herbs. Ahi torino, crusted in macadamia nuts, is also a classic. Lamb, chicken, and veal break from the standards, and the dessert tray, weighed down by decadence, is totally irresistible. KAPALUA. An elegant, all-wood interior, subtly lit and accented with colorful paintings, is a simple foil to stunning views of Maui's hills and the distant ocean. Breezes sift in from the slopes, and an open fireplace cuts the chill on cool days. The Mediterranean-influenced cuisine keeps a consistent quality, and the menu changes regularly, but you can always be certain of fresh seafood. As is common on Maui, you may choose the style of preparation: Sweet Island Breeze (cooked with mirin and macadamia nuts) and Taste of Forest Riches (accompanied by wild mushrooms and Maui onions) are just a few of the options. Curried spinach pot stickers are a terrific appetizer, and you'll also find steak, poultry, lamb, and pasta entrees. Desserts are rich with chocolate and local fruits. |
