        Description: NAPA VALLEY. Spreading some 200 acres, Schramsburg was founded by Jacob Schram, a German immigrant who came from a winemaking family. In 1862, he purchased land in the mountains overlooking Napa Valley and began planting European varietals. By the 1870s, the Schram winery produced around 12,000 barrels, thus establishing its founder as one of Napa's leading viticulturists. In fact, in 1880 the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson even paid the winery a visit, sampling every wine Schram offered him. Today, visitors may tour the historic grounds (including the hand-dug caves) and sample of the current products, which include everything from Brut Rosé and Crémant Demi-Sec to Mirabelle and Chardonnay.
