GEORGETOWN. In 1828, this canal was built to connect DC with the West. Numerous obstacles arose, causing construction to cease in 1850. The canal stretched only to Cumberland, Maryland. What began as a private collection in 1921, now includes more than 250 works from the 19th and 20th centuries.
