When it was started by Prince Albert I in 1911, the goal was to evaluate the latest technological improvements to participating cars. It's highly competitive: only 60 entrants are accepted each year. The most challenging part of the four-day race is the stretch between La Bollène and Sospel, often covered in snow or ice. Watch the winner crowned on the place du Palais in Monaco's Old Town. |

Description:
Menton was once Europe's major lemon producer, so in 1934 the locals gave their Mardi Gras celebration a unique twist, dubbing it the fête du Citron. Today, it is a family-friendly affair starting in mid-February, with plenty of parades and statues created entirely of lemons and other citrus fruit. Top carnivals – like Brazil, New Orleans and Notting Hill – send costumes, dancers and bands. Souvenir hunters, don't miss the kumquat jam and mandarin marmalade. Bizarre, kitsch, and not to be missed! |
