Description:
At more than 100 years old, this grande dame of the region is as famous for its outdoor terrace as it is for the five-star rooms inside. An absolute must for any visitor to Montreux, the terrace is particularly beautiful at sunset with views of Lake Geneva below and the shadows of the Alps above. Order anything, sit for hours, surround yourself with good company. Or you can check out the high-end spa inside... |

Description:
An exquisitely picturesque lakeside location has done much to propel 2m2c (as it’s known) to the top of the centre of excellence chart. Its good looks are backed up with serious substance: Facilities are state of the art (not least the acoustically perfect Stravinsky Auditorium), and the organisational backup is unparalleled. There are two major events every month here, the best known being the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Montreux Sundance Festival. |

Description:
It is not the auditorium itself that is the attraction, although it is rather splendid. The talent's the thing. Previous years have delivered performances by French icons Liane Foly and MC Solaar. And if you prefer music a little less raucous, the annual Montreux Choral Festival and the Swedish National Orchestra also settle in to perform. Showtimes and ticket prices vary. |

Description:
One of Switzerland's most visited attractions, this castle outside Montreux is most famous as the subject of Lord Byron's poem, "The Prisoner of Chillon." Take the path along the lake from Montreux to the castle, then head inside for dark, dreary, tourist-packed fun. Don't settle for the video foisted on you at the entrance. Pay the fee and head inside on your own. Wine-tasting is also on offer. Guided tours are available on Sundays from September through June, daily during July and August - call for times. |

Description:
Housed in a 17th-century building, this "museum of old Montreux" documents the various eras from the dawn of history to the age of tourism – quite a bit of ground to cover. Inside you will find typical artifacts like Roman remains and coins, and less typical showcases revealing how Montreux became a tourist mecca. |

Description:
Despite the range and vigour of the ‘hyper realistic’ works on show, it’s the man, not the medium, that’s the message here. The man was artist and philosopher Victor Ruzo, who excelled in every major genre of 20th-century European painting. Though Ruzo passed on 26 March 2008, his spirit lives on in the body of work he left behind. Though the museum is no longer open to the public, tours are available by request. |

Description:
Truth is, any small train that hauls itself up one of the Alps will lead to good things. In this case, head up and over Montreux for terrific views of France and further. It's another world in the mountains, with another realm of activities. The line runs between Zürich and Geneva, but you can take a much shorter jaunt. If you want to act like a local, find a path and start walking. You'll often find Swiss families doing the same. Call or check the website for schedules. |
