Description:
In the early 17th century, "New Spain" was an important region for the Spanish. Acapulco was an integral part of trade routes with the Philippine Islands, which were also part of the Spanish empire. In 1616, the fort was built to protect against pirate attacks. An earthquake in 1776 destroyed the original structure, but the current pentagonal building was constructed as an immediate replacement. The Acapulco Historical Museum is housed here and features displays detailing the history and culture of the city from its role in Catholic conversion campaigns to its duties as a port for trade and conquest of the Americas. Embroidered silk tapestries, beads, hand-woven baskets, porcelain vases, Oriental chests and a baroque carriage are on view. |

Description:
No visit to Acapulco would be complete without a day-trip to this island, which is accessible via ferry from docks beside the aquarium. Glass-bottom boat tours depart from Playa Tlacopanocha and visit the island after surveying coastal vistas. Be sure to bring sunscreen, water, and a few brewskis for wild, beer-drinking burros that are the island's only permanent inhabitants. A hilltop lighthouse can be reached via a short path and offers spectacular views. After all these activities, schedule a few hours of rest and relaxation on Isla Roqueta's beautiful sandy beach. |

Description:
Acapulco's most famous attraction began in 1934, when brave young boys would wow tourists by diving over 100 feet off the steep cliffs into a narrow canal 12 feet wide by 21 feet deep. Today the performers wait for a wave and then dive 130 feet into the surf. The show may be viewed from an observation deck, or if you enjoy dinner at the Plaza Las Glorias hotel, you can watch the show while you eat. |

ZONA TRADICIONAL. This is the open-air market where Acapulquenos shop for daily necessities. Fresh meat and vegetables, clothes, candles, baskets, flowers and leather sandals are available inside this maze of stalls. Be sure to arrive early to avoid the crowds. Also, many vendors close shop at 1pm, despite the official closing time of 7pm. |

If you're determined to find an authentic, truly off-the-beaten path excursion, take a taxi out to the Veladero National Park which encompasses 7805 acres in the mountain range that surrounds Acapulco Bay. Once there, you can hike up through the dense, tropical vegetation to view a variety of petroglyphs thought to be the work of Acapulco's first peoples. The climb is strenous but worth it for the spectacular views back over the bay to the city. Set up a tour at El Fuerte de San Diego (744-482-3828). |

Description:
Built in 1981, this park is named for a luxury hotel that used to be located here. Now the 52 acres are home to a life-sized model of a Spanish galleon built for climbing on, a replica of the space shuttle Columbia, a roller skating rink, bumper boats and go-carts. While the kids are playing, Mom and Dad will enjoy strolling through the aviary and gardens or shopping at the crafts village. Restaurants and cafes provide refreshments after a long afternoon of play. |
