About La Malbaie, QC

Visitors always treasure the time they spend in and around Québec's spectacular Charlevoix Region. La Malbaie, a riverside community first settled in the 17th century, owes its name to Samuel de Champlain, who spent the night here only to find that the bay went completely dry at low tide – "Ah! La malle baye!" he bemoaned. The area has long been considered a haven for tourists, who adore its inviting inns and hotels and lovely topography. The quaint villages to the north – Saint-Siméon, Pointe-au-Persil and Cap-à-la-Aigle – must not be missed. Plan a day to head south on scenic Route 362 and explore Les Éboulements, St-Joseph-de-la-Rive and the island community of L'Île-aux-Coudres. Of course, a whale-watching tour is a must, with tours leaving from Baie-Sainte-Catherine or Tadoussac, both of which lie at the entrance of the dramatic Saguenay Fjord. Sightseeing isn't all, though, as nearby Baie-Saint-Paul is a shopper and art-collector's haven. Most will agree that Charlevoix cuisine is nothing short of superb, featuring fresh seafood, wild game and local produce.

The breathtaking Saguenay Fjord, carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age, is a true photographer's paradise. Its icy blue waters drop to a depth of 250 meters (far deeper than the Saint-Lawrence) and are flanked on both sides by soaring cliffs that reach heights in excess of 300 meters. In the warmer months, tours of the Saguenay River depart daily from both Tadoussac and and Baie-Sainte-Catherine.
