About Lake Louise, AB

It's almost impossible, upon first seeing Lake Louise, not to gasp. The beautiful, milky blue lake rests at the foot of Victoria Glacier, which rises majestically behind it, capped by snow and ice year-round. First sighted by Europeans in 1882, the lake has become one of Canada's best-loved and most-visited resorts. The village that grew up around it is reassuringly compact. Set on the lake itself, the Château Lake Louise, built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, is now the focus of shopping, dining and recreation on the upper slopes of the mountain. Farther below lies the village itself, which is composed mainly of resorts and the small Samson Mall. The entire area offers a host of leisure opportunities, including skiing, hiking, fishing and biking. Moraine Lake is a short distance away and is perfect for a day trip. As with most of the Rockies, the area affords incredible opportunity for sightseeing and photography.

Lake Louise, AB Factoid
One of the best times to visit Lake Louise is in mid-January, when the Ice Magic International Ice Sculpture Competition and Exhibition takes the village by storm. Sculptors from all over the globe compete, crafting intricate, glittering sculptures from enormous blocks of ice. The completed pieces are available for everyone to see, and they're kept on public display until the middle of March or until the weather warms up, whichever comes first. The main competition takes place in front of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, with additional events at the Lake Louise Inn and Samson Mall.
