About Cancún, Mexico

Around a thousand years ago, the Mayan civilization in Mexico started to prosper and spread, eventually founding its only coastal town just south of modern Cancún. Tropical jungles hid Cancún from the rest of the modern world until the 1960s, but through developmental initiatives the government officially christened Cancún a city in 1974. With its fine, white beaches, turquoise water, and a seemingly inexhaustible amount of sunny weather, Cancún quickly developed into one of the world's most celebrated tourist destinations. The Hotel Zone, with its high concentration of the best dining and nightlife, is the most happening area. A cacophony of live music fills the night from clubs and discos throughout the city, but during the day, water sports, sunbathing and shopping occupy most visitors. A tropical paradise loaded with modern amenities, Cancún is a city that delights in bringing tourists back again and again.
