About St Andrews, UK - Scotland

St Andrews is the spiritual home of golf, has a history and ruins to prove its former ecclesiastical supremacy, is home to one of the world's oldest universities, and has a certain royal connection. What surprises first-time visitors is therefore the tinyness of the town: it has a population of only 17,000 that swells to 26,000 during university term times. This corner of Fife – called the East Neuk – is one of Scotland's most breathtaking coastlines, with the vast expanse of the North Sea and some spectacular skies creating a real sense of drama and space. The centuries-old stone buildings of the original town are mixed with large Georgian mansions and, near the shore, fishermen's cottages. The area around the links is one of the most iconic images of Scotland: the Royal and Ancient Golf Course of St Andrews and the beach are the two most enduring images of the Oscar-winning film, Chariots of Fire. It is for this, and golf, that the world recognises St Andrews. From the giddy, excitable students during term time to the upwardly mobile golf tourists who flood the town in the summer months, the town's changing atmosphere allows you to see its many sides. That it has eschewed the temptation and pressures to change in the face of transient demand is, more often than not, to its credit. It is very much a Scottish town going about its business: that it happens to be the destination of rich and famous golfers and well-heeled students has not gone to its head.
