Description:
The story of this wine-producing region can be traced to the mid-19th century, when the grandfather of California viticulture, Hungarian-born Agoston Haraszathy de Mokcsa, decided to grow grapes on his 500-plus-acre estate in modern Sonoma County. Climate and geography cooperated, and the experiment was incredibly successful, yielding excellent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. Today, the entire area is known for great regional wines. Napa Valley boasts 200 commercial vineyards, along with inviting villages and fine dining, shopping and sightseeing. Sonoma County, its less touristy sibling, features jagged coastal cliffs and dramatic vistas. Its quaint, family-owned wineries are more secluded than Napa's, giving visitors the impression that they've escaped from the bustle of the real world, if only for a moment.
