Pharos Pizza and Spaghetti
(Restaurants - Greek)
8708 109 St NW, Edmonton  AB  T6G 1E9 • 780-433-5205
Distance: ~2.502 km
Description: For decades, Pharos has been a favorite with U of A students and alumni. You could chalk it up to the location, right on the edge of the U of A campus adjacent to the Garneau Theatre, and the somewhat dated (but now considered retro cool) furnishings spread out beneath an incredible vaulted ceiling. But the bottom line is the food, and the Greek owners know how to cook it! Soul satisfying pizza, pasta, salads and sandwiches in generous portions, at affordable prices. That's what it's really all about, and why Pharos continues to have a hallowed spot in the hearts of so many college graduates.

Ziveli
(Restaurants - Greek)
12202 Jasper Ave NW, Edmonton  AB  T5N 3K3 • 780-453-3912
Distance: ~2.804 km
Description: A favorite with many a local resident, Ziveli is widely regarded as one of the top Greek restaurants in town. The décor is somewhat sparse, with a blue-and-white color scheme, which allows guests to focus more closely on their food! And what food it is! Traditional Greek and Balkan dishes abound, from Serbian meatballs and roast lamb to moussaka and souvlaki. Whatever you decide, it's bound to be good, and you'll wish you lived closer.

Koutouki Taverna
(Restaurants - Greek)
10719 124 St NW, Edmonton  AB  T5M 0H1 • 780-452-5383
Distance: ~3.236 km
Description: Koutouki Taverna is small and narrow, with a tangle of live plants hanging from what appears to be every inch of ceiling space, and a homey vibe with posters of the old country and printed tablecloths. Lively and loyal regular clientele pack the place most nights, and there's even a belly dancer on occasion, so the atmosphere is usually amiable and sometimes boisterous. But who can blame them? Food this good is bound to put everyone in a good mood! Souvlaki is a winner here – skewers of tender lamb, chicken or beef to enfold in a soft pita with plenty of tzatziki sauce. You can also easily make a meal from mezes – hummus, dolmades, saganaki, calamari, olives, keftides and the like. Wash it all down with a cold Mythos, and life is very good indeed.

Syrtaki Greek Island Restaurant and Pub
(Restaurants - Greek)
16313 111 Ave NW, Edmonton  AB  T5M 2S2 • 780-484-2473 • 780-484-8924
Distance: ~7.784 km
Description: Syrtaki is a bit out of the way, situated as it is within an industrial park. Nevertheless, they've managed to stay in business for more than a quarter of a century, so they must be doing something right. And that something is Greek food. Start with dips – the combination plate of tsatziki, hommus and tarama allows you to sample three wonderful Mediterranean flavors, just remember to order enough pita. Or try the keftethakia, Greek style meatballs with tsatziki. When it's time to order your main course, the combination platter for two is ideal if you have someone to share it with. Otherwise, char broiled fish or shrimp, lamb souvlaki and moussaka are all excellent.

Grub Med Ristorante
(Restaurants - Greek)
17 Fairway Dr, Edmonton  AB  T6J 2S6 • 780-436-1988
Distance: ~8.335 km
Description: In spite of a somewhat questionable moniker, this off-the-beaten-path restaurant is a worthy member of Edmonton's thriving Greek dining scene. Indeed, the house specialty, Kleftico (roasted lamb), consistently wins accolades from reviewers and patrons alike. Other good things to try include spanakopita, saganaki, moussaka, and the earthy, rich stifado. Be sure to save room for an after-dinner treat: the baklava is sweet and flaky, but you'd be wise to sample something a little different, such as Bougatsa (custard-filled phyllo pastry sprinkled with cinnamon), or Milopita (spiced apples and raisins under crispy pastry).
