        Description: RIVIÈRE-MALBAIE. This enchanting campground, which opened in 1962, is one of the oldest such parks in the Charlevoix region. Of course, the highlight of the park is the Comporté River and its 98-foot cascade – the Chutes Fraser. Other family-friendly activities located at the park include trout fishing (by permit only), hiking trails, wild berry picking and swimming. From mid-May until mid-October, the campground is open, featuring more than 280 sites. Cottage rental is also available.

        Description: CLERMONT. Parc des Grands-Jardins offers a wide range of activities for outdoor lovers. Hikers can expect to tromp through everything from gradual wooded areas to sub-arctic terrain – just keep in mind that the park is home to healthy populations of black bears, moose and even caribou. One of the most scenic trails makes a steep, four-hour ascent to Mont du Lac des Cygnes, which seems like the roof of the world. The closest access from La Malbaie is via the Thomas-Fortin Visitors Center (418-457-3945), open daily from June to August, 9am-5pm.

        Description: CLERMONT. Situated in a dramatic river gorge carved by glaciers thousands of years ago, this beautiful park quickly earns a special place in the hearts and memories of its visitors. Flanked by mountain peaks that rise more than 3000 feet, the Malbaie River winds its way through some of Eastern Canada's most remote country, offering some of the area's most spectacular outdoor activities. The park features numerous hiking trails and bike paths with varying degrees of difficulty, as well as primitive campsites. In the summer months (June-mid August), river cruises run up and down the Malbaie – make sure you make reservations well in advance (418-665-7527).

        Description: BAIE-ST-PAUL. Open from early June until mid-October, this worthwhile nature center is a great place to visit, especially if fun in the great outdoors is on your agenda. The center features several trails leading to belvederes that overlook the icy-blue Saint Lawrence River, area waterfalls and tranquil streams. On clear days, the breathtaking panorama from the Terrasse Félix-Antoine-Savard stretches from Petite Rivière-Saint-Francois east to Les Éboulements. The Domaine Charlevoix boasts picnic facilities, bicycle paths, and designated swimming areas, as well as a restaurant and the enchanting Maison de Thé, a tea house located in the middle of the woods.

        Description: TADOUSSAC. The Dunes Interpretation Center, located at the base of a high cliff in Saguenay Park, is actually a historic old stone house (circa 1922). This should be a primary stop for bird-lovers, especially those visiting the breathtaking Saguenay Fjord for the first time. In the fall of the year, the Tadoussac Dunes area becomes a major stopover point for several species of migratory birds. If exploring is your thing, several worthwhile trails begin at the Center and wind around the dunes area and surrounding cliffs, ultimately bringing you right on top of the mighty Saint Lawrence.

        Description: FJORD DU SAGUENAY. The awe-inspiring Saguenay Fjord has sheer cliffs that soar to heights of more than 350 meters above the icy waters of the Saguenay River. Created by glacial flows during the last ice age, the fjord's eerie waters drop to depths in excess of 270 meters, far deeper than any part of the Saint-Lawrence. Plan an entire day around your visit to the fjord, including a visit to Baie-Éternité, whose unmatched beauty is seemingly guarded by Caps Trinité and Éternité, two cliffs reaching more than 500 meters into the Québec sky. Countless miles of trails traverse the park on either side of the river, making it immensely popular with area hikers. In the warmer months, cruises up the fjord leave daily from Tadoussac and Baie-Sainte-Catherine.
