In 1809, the British built this dockyard, which served as the headquarters for the Royal Navy until 1951. Today, the Navy's only influence is felt at the excellent Maritime Museum. The cruise ship terminal, located in the dockyard, offers an excellent spot for people watching – get a picnic lunch and relax for half an hour. When you're rested, head to the shopping arcade, where a wide variety of tempting boutiques and specialty shops sell souvenir items. In the Cooperage area of the dockyard, you can visit the craft market and watch artisans at work. An arts center also displays local and international paintings and sculpture. A water park has snorkeling by the day or hour, and a water sports shop rents boats and helps plan island tours. Plan to spend a day exploring the Dockyard's many diversions. Somers Gardens (Attractions & Activities - Sightseeing) Duke of York St, St. George Parish  HM BX • 441-297-1532         Description: ST GEORGE'S PARISH. In 1620, British citizen Sir George Somers died in Bermuda. His nephew knew that superstitious sailors would not willingly transport a corpse back to England, so he had his uncle's entrails and organs removed and then had the body embalmed and placed in a sealed cedar box. Thanks to his ruse, the box and its secret contents successfully arrived in Lyme, England. Sir George's heart and other organs remain buried in these gardens in Bermuda. In 1920, the area became a public park, and a monument in the walled garden commemorates the man's memory. St. David's Island (Attractions & Activities - Sightseeing)         Description: ST GEORGE'S PARISH. This area of Bermuda is the best place to experience the island's colorful seafaring history. Many of the locals never even venture over to St. George's, preferring instead to live off the land and sea. Their independence is a fierce tribute to Bermuda's early settlers.
